What should employers do when unexpected catastrophes happen?

We live in strange times. In the developed world in times of peace, we can afford to believe that low salaries, inequality, and bad office coffees are the worst that can happen. And suddenly, we have to fear for our lives, and for all the people we care for and know. The psychological consequences of uncertainty are not only damaging but often irreversible, and worst of all, can not be avoided with preparation.

IseeQ is a Budapest-based recruitment agency, and the Ukrainian-Russian war hits very close to our hearts. We know amazing professionals working in tech and business in Kyiv, and also have friends abroad that are in serious need of help. We can not give our opinions on political situations as we are no experts in the field, but we can contribute with suggestions within our expertise. This article is meant to collect ways you can help either your employees in similar situations when unexpected catastrophes hit your average lives.

1. Ensure your employees’ safety

Pick up contact with every affected person, let them know what they can expect from your company, and help them find available resources. Try to ask for their needs, and facilitate every attempt of them getting necessary help. Whether it means shelter, mental support or other forms of protection, try to prioritize their safety as much as possible.

2. Provide aids and emergency funds

Money makes the world go round, it can save lives and is the most effective weapon in crisis. People who need to be on the run are in desperate need of money, and should their savings not cover the costs, their lives can depend on it. Also, it is the quickest way to provide for their everyday needs and struggles. They will instantly have access to food, transportation and safe accommodation.

3. Care for their relocation

Money is usually not the only issue in times when relocation is not an option but a necessity. Visa regulations, flight delays and national bans can all hinder the process. Make sure your employees have access to legal advice, and are facilitated throughout the process, so the whole situation doesn’t evolve into pure chaos.

4. Facilitate information flow and availability

While someone is in need, their average focus is always on the next step. This can make them miss crucial information, possibly affecting their lives and routes. Constant contact is inevitable, and it helps even more to have hotlines as well, in case more people are affected. Metal health support and informational channels are both necessary and important, so your people know they always have someone to call.

5. Don’t stay silent

Such issues should not be swept under the rug in 2022. Together, as humanity, we are meant to care for each other, stick together and take action for a more sustainable future. Unexpected, uncertain times will always come and go. We can either stick to outdated ideas of normal or create alternatives that support the survival and peaceful coexistence of all. Respecting and protecting our planet and each other are equally important.
