Sooner or later, every individual comes to the realization that task management is no joke. It requires skills, attention to detail, constant planning and updating schedules, and sometimes it takes up more energy than the actual tasks you’re trying to organize.
Sooner or later, every individual comes to the realization that task management is no joke. It requires skills, attention to detail, constant planning and updating schedules, and sometimes it takes up more energy than the actual tasks you’re trying to organize. Project management takes the process one step further. You have to keep an eye out for the ultimate goal, and sub-results, you have to be able to prioritize, resiliently re-evaluate targets, and eventually hit them. Procrastination, outer factors and unexpected delays or challenges may all make the road even more difficult, so you have to make sure to know where your head’s at, at all times. We collected our 5 best task management tips to get you started!
Tasks that seem way too hard at first glance can usually be broken down into small, digestible steps. If you manage to get started, try to list out all the steps you need to take towards the next milestone. Checklists that include as many boxes as possible are prone to be ticked more frequently, which might also tickle your ego just enough to keep you going.
Out of human nature, we tend to lose focus quite easily, due to a series of different distractions like noise, smells, sudden lights, and other forms of unexpected stimulations. It’s no different with tasks: the more you try to focus on, the less you actually achieve, and the more you end up confused. Try cutting one head of a dragon at a time.
When you start concentrating on your projects, make sure to schedule the scary ones first. You’re most likely fresher, more attentive and calm when you start the process, and this makes your chances of procrastination significantly lower. After you’re done with the most difficult tasks, you’ll find the lighter ones even easier, and you’ll most likely finish your to-do list earlier than expected.
Visualization always helps to map complex responsibilities. Try drawing a project outline, showing the bigger milestones, tasks, and everything else that makes the process more “alive” to you. Make sure to include the next steps based on your own preferences, and illustrate whatever makes you know where you are and where you’re headed.
Connected to the previous point, you don’t have to be an illustrator to create digestible flow charts. There are countless software, apps, and programs on the internet that do just that for you. Asana, Trello and Basecamp are 3 of our favorites to use. They even have options for collaborations with your colleagues, which can come in handy if you’re handling a project with other individuals or workmates.
Mastering task management will take you a great deal of time, patience and adaptability, but we promise you it will be worth it. You may experience increased productivity, less stress and improved focus as a result, you just need to find the method that works for you! Best of luck!
